A year later, when Umberto Poli was born, his father was already gone, supposedly in jail for the crime of lese majeste.
The two did not meet for twenty years. The abandoned mother lived in a state of depression until 1921; she is the prototype of the doleful women who appear in Saba's poetry.

Saba never showed any bitterness toward his father and seems to have regarded him as the spark that ignited the flame of poetry in his soul.
